We started our recognition of MLK Jr. Day by participating in a "chalk talk." Paper with various MLK related questions and quotes were stationed around the room. Students rotated to each station in silence, read the question, and anonymously wrote a response, thought, or question. As students visited each station, they read the responses of others and piggybacked on what they had said as well. The 3H students later stated how much they enjoyed the nature of that activity and enjoyed the silence so they could "hear their thinking."
The following day I read the responses and we discussed the thoughts that were contributed. We followed up our discussion with a video biography on MLK and some songs written in his honor:
Enjoy! We sure did!
